Blog Tour: Isolation by Denise Stephenson - Guest Post

Isolation

Isolation depicts a bleak but recognizable future in which the fear of contagion reaches a fever pitch as a bacterial epidemic catapults the US into an apocalyptic crisis.

Touch is outlawed. Mothers like Maggie bind their infants’ hands, terrified they might slip fingers into mouths. Gary, a Sterilizer, uses robots to scour the infected, avoiding all contact with human flesh. Trevor, the Chief Enforcer, watches, eager to report any and all infractions.

One inadvertent touch will change all of their lives.

Denise Stephenson

DENISE R. STEPHENSON resides in Oceanside, CA, but she has lived in all the isolated locales of this novel at one time or another. Her publishing history is primarily academic, though as a member of Attention Deficit Drama, she has written and produced monologs and short plays. This is her first novel.

And now, let's welcome Denise to the blog!

Inspiration for Isolation

In my youth I was an idealist. Maybe that’s not that uncommon, but I lived out my idealism as an activist. When the United Farm Workers sought better conditions, I boycotted grapes. When I was in college, I wrote letters to Congress in church-related efforts to feed the hungry. When a friend ran away from an abusive home, I began volunteering at a women’s shelter. In the 80s, when the US and USSR were poised for anhiliation, I organized peace protests against nuclear weapons. Then I went to grad school and found I needed to focus my limited time. I didn’t stop caring, but I read little news, wrote few letters, rarely stood in protest. My values didn’t change, even though I wasn’t acting on them outwardly.

The germs of my novel Isolation came from the fear of a swine flu epidemic in the fall of 2009, changes in behavior that swept through the country, my concerns about the overuse of 99% bacterial killing soaps and sanitizers, and a line that came into my head: “laying a finger aside of his nose.”

The flu that year went pandemic, around the world, but not epidemic; it didn’t wipe out humanity. Though it killed tens of thousands world-wide, that’s a tiny, tiny fraction of the population. The fear, however, was palpable. The Centers for Disease Control in the US and the World Health Organization, among others, mounted campaigns to reduce the spread of the virus by teaching us to sleeve the sneeze and catch the cough. They produced posters about the importance of hand-washing which were bright yellow and still adorn the classroom walls on my campus.

Simultaneously, access to hand sanitizers became ubiquitous in many public places, like grocery stores. Though I’m not a scientist, I worried that we didn’t want to kill all of our bacteria because I knew that we needed it for digestion and to build a healthy immune system. Personally I wondered if we should use all of the 99% bacteria-killing soaps. But I was clearly in the minority.

One day while walking, I heard the line “laying a finger aside his nose” from the “Night Before Christmas” echoing in my head. I imagined a boy who found the children’s story in a box of old things from his mother’s childhood. Seeing Santa touch his nose, the boy recognized the book as contraband, since face-touching was not allowed in his world. He secreted the page under his mattress like the pornography it was until he could show it to a friend. Suddenly I was thinking about a world in which face-touching was prohibited; that reality didn’t seem far off.

Along the way I realized how much our food supply had already been contaminated by sudden and frequent outbreaks of E. Coli and other dangerous bacteria. I worried about the dangers of GMOs, though I knew little of the science. Given that I’d never lost sight of the farm workers I’d supported in my youth and given that I’d been a vegetarian more than once over the years due to concerns about Alar in apples, the way chicken is processed, or the dangers of raw spinach, it wasn’t a difficult leap to make Agri-Biz into the evil backdrop to the dystopia I imagined.

These ideas stayed with me for a couple of years. I read news about the various threads and occasionally wrote short vignettes that I shared with my writing group, but I didn’t imagine I was preparing for a novel until I had the opportunity for a sabbatical.

And even then, I was intent on not saying a novel was my goal. It was too frightening. As a writing center director I created a project which required me to write more than 100 pages of fiction. The intent was to recreate for myself the conditions college students face when they have to write a longer paper than they experience writing in a genre or discipline they have little experience in.

At that point, the stage was set for me to write Isolation. Though at the time, I kept emphasizing that I wasn’t writing a novel, just a long piece of fiction. Secretly I hoped for a novel, but I denied it to everyone outwardly. I didn’t want to fail.

Oh, and the activism of my youth, oddly, writing this dystopian novel has led me back to it—a bit. Promoting my book through social media has led me to follow several bacteria-related entities as well as anti-GMO and food safety advocates. They’re a good source of news as well as marketing oportunities—how life changes.

Book Description:

Elora
Pertin spent her life trying to please her father, an esteemed
General for the Empire.

When
he convinced her to leave her quiet life as a scientist to advance a
secret project for the Emperor, she had no idea what she was getting
into. The seemingly innocent projects she engineered were actually
being used to develop a genocidal weapon. After uncovering the
Emperor’s plot, Elora had no choice but to act.

Elora
finds herself fighting for her life against the Empire she once
served, abandoning everything with only a handful of friends and an
unlikely ally—the Emperor’s deadliest assassin. Will he prove
himself true as her protector, a loyal servant of the Empire, or a
romantic distraction? With the law and assassins searching the star
system for them, Elora and her team are determined to accomplish
their mission . . . or die trying.

Excerpt One:

Back
in her room, Elora tried to come up with another plan. If her father
couldn’t—or
wouldn’t—help,
she had to find someone else. Just finishing and going home was not
an option. She tried to focus on the weapon, but was preoccupied with
thoughts of her father. What was he involved with? How could he
involve her in the development of an illegal weapon? He had been her
rock and best friend since her mom died when she was so young. If she
couldn’t trust her dad, whom could she trust?
She
had just closed her eyes to practice the meditative techniques she
learned on Naruta when she was suddenly pulled out of bed to her
feet. She felt the strong arms of a man on either side of her head.
Instinctively, she tried to jerk his arms away because she was sure
he was about to break her neck. Her head was pulled so far to one
side she could feel the muscles in her neck tearing apart. Then he
stopped.

Elora
could barely see the mirror in her peripheral. The man’s black
monochromatic attire made him hard to see in the dark room, but she
could make him out against her body. He was tall with shaggy dark
hair, slightly curly on the ends. He had a strong jaw, and as she
moved up his face, she saw he was looking at her in the mirror. His
eyes were dark—almost as black as his clothes. Just as suddenly as
he pulled her out of bed, he released her.

And now, let's welcome Sara to the blog!
Pinterest for Authors

If you’re an author, traditionally published or self-published, you’re probably thinking about how you can market your book. Social media should be part of every author’s platform, and there is a ton of information out there on how to utilize Facebook and Twitter, but Pinterest is often overlooked. Pinterest is one of the fastest growing social media sites where users “pin” images from the web onto boards. It’s almost solely a visual site, but you can also write short, concise descriptions. Here are some ways authors can utilize Pinterest in their author platforms:
1.     Create a board for each of your novels or novel series. I have a board dedicated to Renegades where I pin settings, space ships, weapons, clothes, and actors to play the characters. For fans of the book, they can see images that have inspired me or images that show what I imagine.
2.     Picking a Cover. When I work with my graphic designer, I end up with several cover options and often variations to one that I like the most. If you have enough followers, a way you can use Pinterest in an interactive way is to ask people to repin the cover they like the most to help you choose.
3.     Help Boost Blog Visibility. A great way to lure new readers to your blog is to pin the images you use to Pinterest. The caveat to this is that you always have to use at least one image per blog post.
4.     Writing Inspiration Board. Whether you post images of your favorite writing clothes or spots or inspiration quotes, a writing inspiration board will not only help encourage other writers, but hopefully you too when the motivation isn’t quite there.
5.     Fan Art. If you’re lucky enough to have fans sending you illustrations and drawings inspired by your book(s), then pin them!

So if you don’t have a Pinterest account, go ahead and make one! Just a warning: you will become addicted.

By the way, I think that this is a fantastic book, I just finished reading it and I absolutely cannot wait for the next book to come out. This is certainly a book worth checking out. Do keep an eye out for my review!

Excerpt:

A
black-and-white tie...
----

Thoughts froze within
his mind. Spit bubbled through his pursed lips.

ALN-896 finally
managed to pull away from the exposed wire. He fell to the ground and
wiped away the spit dribbling down his cheek. His heart raced, and
sweat poured down his body.

That was the most
painful sensation he had ever experienced.

I never should have
grabbed that wire...

ALN-896 stood up
slowly and looked around. No one saw what had just happened. He was
alone on the desolate stretch of Simov Street.

Fortunately, I did
not get hurt.

Instead of continuing,
he decided to get back into his car and let a nice cup of tea calm
him.

From the center
console of the car, green tea was automatically dispensed into a cup.
He let the liquid slide down his throat, easing every muscle that had
tensed. He melted into his plush seat as he let his mind come to a
halt. Then the silence was interrupted by a robotic voice. “ALN-
896, your vitals are irregular. Is everything all right?”

Everything is fine.
I went to inspect one of the house's trashcans as I was instructed
to, but I noticed an exposed wire on the ground. I went to cover it
back up when it...”

ALN-896 wasn't quite
sure
what had actually
happened when he touched the wire. He hadn’t been electrocuted, but
something strange had occurred. The only thing he could get out of
the experience was that he had seen a black-and-white tie floating in
the darkness behind his closed eyelids. Nothing surrounded it, but he
knew it had been attached to a body. One he hadn’t been able see,
but one he knew existed somewhere within the black.

Irrelevant.

When it...,”
ALN-896 stumbled. “When it shocked me,” he lied.

Your job still
needs to be completed. You still need to inspect the trashcans for
Monday's workday. After your tea, you need to continue.”

Yes, I understand.”

And now, let's invite Zackery to the blog for a short post!

Authors That Have Inspired Me

In life, we typically learn how to do something from those that come before us. For example, if you want to learn how to drive, we either have our parents, friends, or some random stranger teach us the difference between the gas and brake pedals so we don't plow into the side of buildings when we want to stop at a stop sign. If we want to learn how to snowboard we can either learn on our own or ask for help from the local ski resort guide, the former of which might include far more bruises, the latter of which may include awkward conversations. Regardless, the best solution is to usually learn by example, so when I set out to write my first novel, it took quite a bit of reading to get a good idea of the kind of writing-style I preferred, as well as learn the ins-and-outs of grammar for mainstream literature.
The first book I read that really inspired me was Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. In fact, more than any other book, this one was the one that really got the gears running. Not only did it fall in the same genre of Science-Fiction but it also tackled some of the same ideas I wanted to include in Epsilon A.R.. Ray Bradbury's beautiful writing spoke to me and I knew from that moment onward that I wanted my novel out of my head and on paper.
The next book that really inspired me was The Anthem by Ayn Rand. For the same reasons as Fahrenheit 451,” Rand's work really got me thinking about what kind of novel I wantedEpsilon A.R. to be. It also introduced this notion of history within the world that I wanted to include. I didn't just want to focus on one character, I wanted an entire world with its own history. The tone of the piece, as well, spoke volumes (pun intended) to me and lent to some of the darker tones of my novel.
The last book, or series in this case, that really stretched my imagination was Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Snicket introduced a style of writing I adored, but more so, this sense of conspiracy and lose. I found that I didn't need to spoon feed information to the readers and instead, I could let certain secrets bubble under the surface for a while. Secrets and conspiracy found its way into nearly every corner of the dark room I call Epsilon A.R. and Lemony Snicket is partly to blame for that.
With all of these, as well as countless other resources pulled from other books, movies, music and history, I found a way to weave a story that I hope does all of these inspirations justice. If it does, we can all say, “Hip-hip-hooray!” and wait for that sequel. If not, you can say, “Boo!” but I'm still going to write the sequel.

Aubrie Dionne

Aubrie grew up watching the original Star Wars movies over and over until she could recite and reenact every single scene in her backyard. She also loved The Goonies, Star Trek the Next Generation--favorite character was Data by far--and Indiana Jones. But, her all time favorite movie was The Last Unicorn. She still wonders why the unicorn decided to change back to a unicorn in the end.

Aubrie wrote in her junior high yearbook that she wanted to be “a concert flutist” when she grew up. She majored in flute performance at the University of New Hampshire on a full scholarship, then secured two teaching jobs at a University and a local community music school. While playing in orchestras and teaching, stories popped into her head, and she used them to make the music come alive for her flute students. Her students said they were so good, she had to write them down! Maybe they were right, who knows? Two careers seems to keep her busy. For now.

She is represented by Dawn Dowdle and writes sweet and adventurous fantasy, science fiction, and contemporary romance.

Time for a short excerpt!

We were the only people in the corridor, and the air thickened with static friction. He dropped his head next to mine, our foreheads almost touching. “What a great adventure, Annie.”

He glanced down at my quivering lips. Was he going to kiss me?

We hung suspended for a small eternity. So many emotions swirled through me at once, I couldn’t process all of them: excitement, elation, fear. My conscience murmured one word. Forbidden.

I pulled my head back before it was too late, feeling my heart tear. “You could have gotten us into trouble.”

He took a deep breath, as if he tried to repress his own feelings as well. “Just wait until we reach Paradise 21.”

Our destiny slapped me in the face. The truth was a wall between us. Our assignments loomed in our future and soon there’d be no more adventures. Not for the two of us, anyway. A hundred teens made up our graduating class and the possibility we’d be matched together was slim, especially after they computed my miserable test results.

And now, let's welcome Aubrie to the blog!

Why I wrote about benevolent aliens instead of crazy/scary/evil ones.

Crazy/scary/evil aliens are so much more fun to write about, aren’t they? They could take over people’s bodies, exterminate entire populations, read their minds, suck their brains….ah all the options….it makes me excited just thinking about it. So, why did I opt for the world peace version in Colonization?
Well, these aliens first appear in Paradise 21, the first book in my new adult space opera series. They’re meant to contrast with humans, who have made Earth unlivable through wars, overpopulation, greed, and over extending their resources. These aliens had created a perfect society of peace, understanding, and living in harmony. They outlasted their own sun, while humans destroyed the Earth long before its time should have been up. That’s the message in Paradise 21, and you finally get a glimpse of who they were in Colonization: Paradise Reclaimed.
Andromeda, the main character, gets to meet one of them. Not alive, of course, because their population has been wiped out by something threatening her own colony, but readers of Paradise 21 will get a further glimpse into the aliens’ world and how they’d interact with humans. The threat on Paradise 21 isn’t crazy/scary/evil aliens, it’s something much more subtle and insidious.
See for yourself in Colonization: Paradise Reclaimed.

Time for a short excerpt!

He had an unforgettable face. Sharp cheekbones, square jaws and piercing gray eyes that didn’t say much. His dark wavy hair was cut short, but not too short. Unruly strands rebelled and curled across his brow and at his nape. His skin was bronze, like he spent time outdoors. The turned down waistband indicated no tan lines either. A nudist? Interesting.
“About last night,” she said casually, noticing he hadn’t touched his coffee. “I don’t usually pull a gun on unsuspecting people, and I make a really mean cup of coffee.” She slid the steaming cup closer. “Go on, try it.”
She’d hoped for a smile, but got a frown instead. Mr. Fitzgerald was obviously not a morning person. How long was he planning on staying? Baron and Kara Fitzgerald tended to visit for a few days to a week before heading back to L.A.
“Excuse me for asking a dumb question, but who is Raelynn?” Eddie asked.
“My daughter.”
He looked around, his gaze zeroing on the toys piled by the door leading to the patio before coming back to her. “How old is she?”
“Almost five going on thirty. Her birthday is in two weeks.”
“Where is she?”
“Still asleep, but she’ll be up any minute. Why do you ask?”
“I’d like us to have an adult discussion without a child clouding anyone’s judgment.”
He was going to say he didn’t need a housekeeper again. She just knew it. “Okay, but FYI, I have an iron-clad contract, so if you are thinking of kicking us out, I will sue you from here to kingdom come and win,” she said with a confidence she didn’t feel.
Eddie scowled. “Why would I kick you out?”
“Because you said you didn’t need me last night and that I should take a hike.”
“I never said that.”
“That’s what I heard.” She picked up her coffee mug with an unsteady hand and sipped, her gaze not shifting from his. “Why don’t we talk outside? You go put on a shirt or something while I dish up your breakfast.”
Eddie stared down at his bare chest as though realizing for the first time he was shirtless. A sheepish expression softened his features and heat coiled in Amy’s stomach, surprising her. It shot up a notch when he turned, giving her a view of his back. Powerful broad shoulders. Narrow hips. Killer ass. The man had a beautiful body.
Just before he disappeared into the hallway leading to the master bedroom, Eddie turned and caught her in the act. Without slowing down, he raised the mug to his lips and sipped, heat flashing in his eyes.

And now, let's welcome Ednah to the blog!

Writing a Love Scene

Good morning and thank you for inviting me to make a stop by your site on the blog tour for FOREVER HERS, book 5 of the FITZGERALD FAMILY series.
How many writers love to write love scenes? If you do, please share your secret. Usually, I have to mentally prepare myself for days before writing a love scene. I read the love scenes in my previous books, watch chick flicks and focus on the foreplay, read other author’s books.
Since I write YA urban fantasy too with lots of fight scenes, I tend to spend days thinking up positions and moves, reading online articles and watching movies/anime with fight scenes. Why? You may ask. Because there’s quite a bit of similarity between fight and love scenes if you think about it. There are moves and countermoves, senses are engaged at a heightened level, endorphins secretions, major sweating and heavy breathing.
Writers engage a reader’s senses when they write most scenes. It’s what makes a book fun to read. Your character does not only see things, they smell, touch, hear, and feel. In every scene, you need to use at least three of the senses to make it gel.
So yes, writing a love scene is daunting. Not only must you know, imagine and listen to your character, you must be able to put everything she sees, feels, touches, smells, and hears into words without making them sound crass or disjointed. Since I never want to cheat readers, I tend to switch POVs halfway. Check out the scene below.

HERE’S A STEAMY SCENE FROM FOREVER HERS
“How’s this for meeting you halfway,” he said then leaned down.
Her breath hitched. He kissed her, his tongue slipping past her lush lips to circle her tongue with quick, urgent strokes. He explored her mouth, savoring the taste of her, begging her to join him.
As if a dam broke loose, she gave in and drank him, arms reaching up to wound around his neck. He dumped the laptop on top of hers and lifted her up from the chair, her legs wrapping around his waist. His head spun with the taste, the feel, the scent of her, but somehow, he made it to the couch, taking her with him. She sat on his lap, legs still wrapped around his waist, the length of his throbbing flesh cradled by the apex of her legs. He could feel her heat and it drove him a little crazy.
His hands cupped her heavy breasts, his thumbs rubbing her tight nipples. She tore her lips from his and threw her head back, her back arching. Beautiful. Giving. She was amazing.
He yanked off her oversize T-shirt off, revealing the lacey black camisole and matching skimpy shorts. For a brief moment, he feasted on her lushness, the ripe strawberry nipples peeking through the lace material.
He buried his face between her perfect mounds and inhaled her essence. She shuddered, gripping his head and pressing him against her.
Blood roaring past his ears, Eddie turned his head and captured one nipple through the lace, nibbled and gnawed on the rosy tips while she squirmed. The material offered no barrier, but it wasn’t enough. He was drowning with need, a ravenous hunger like he’d never experienced before. He opened his mouth and sucked hard, his hands sliding under her camisole to hold her in place, a low growl of hunger escaping his lips.
“Eddie…”
“I want you.” His mouth moved to her neck, nibbling, gnawing. “So much.” He bit her earlobe. “All the time. Say you want me, Amy.”

So yep, that's about it for today! Thanks for visiting!
