Tauna Fenske

When I was six, my mom caught me thumbing through The Joy of Sex while watching Saturday morning cartoons.
When I was ten, I got summoned to the principal’s office for making anatomically-correct clay models of Huck Finn and Jim during a unit on Mark Twain.
When I was 22, I celebrated my English Lit degree by filling a giant black trash bag full of romance novels and dragging it everywhere until I’d read them all.
When I was 32, my cat died, my publisher canceled the line scheduled to release my debut novel, and my employer threatened to fire me for refusing to wear pantyhose—all on my birthday—and I sat down on my back deck with a glass of wine, smiled at the sunset, and thought, “if I can find the humor in this, I can find it in damn near anything.”
In a nutshell, that’s how I became an author of quirky romantic comedy.
I traveled a career path that meandered from newspaper reporter to English teacher in Venezuela to medical marketing geek to PR manager for my city’s tourism bureau.
I have a degree in English Lit, a membership in Romance Writers of America, and a habit of spilling food on my boobs. When I’m not writing, I’m usually busy sipping wine, reading, experimenting in my kitchen (either on gourmet meals or as research for one of my risqué scenes), hiking, snowshoeing, standup paddleboarding, or contorting myself into odd positions (either for yoga or for the aforementioned research).
An avid globetrotter and social media fiend, I blog at Don’t Pet Me, I’m Writing, routinely overshare on Facebook, and can be found making tasteless jokes in 140 characters or less on Twitter.
My debut romantic comedy with Sourcebooks, Making Waves, was nominated for Best Contemporary Romance in the 2011 RT Book Reviewers’ Choice Awards, and the Chicago Tribune noted, “Fenske’s wildly inventive plot and wonderfully quirky characters provide the perfect literary antidote to any romance reader’s summer reading doldrums.”

Marine for Hire was a fun read. It was a pleasant way to pass the time, with a smoking hot Marine as one of the main characters. Sheridan was another amazing main, and I found her really interesting and fun to read about.

I enjoyed the plot and the pacing of the book. I did want to see more of how Sheri handled the kids though. I did admire her because while she had all those insecurities, she nevertheless took care of her kids to the best of her abilities. And the way she handled her ex husband at the end? What’s his name, Jonathan? (Sorry, I’m horrible with names, plus I read this book, what a week ago? Add short term memory to that haha) But yes, the way she handled him at the end? It was fantastic. And she was so cool omg. But yes, I really did enjoy her character and the way she just wasn’t afraid of things, especially that between her and Sam.

I really did enjoy seeing how the characters fell in love. I wish it was shown more explicitly? Rather than just, they keep sleeping together then suddenly realize that “hey, he means so much to me” or “I can’t live without her”. Still, it doesn’t take away from the fact that you know they’re in love, and you know that they’re really right for each other. Personally, I would have preferred more angst during the conflict? Still, I think the fact that she was willing to accept him and he so willing to make amends just shows the depth of their love.

One thing that I’m really excited for though, is Mac’s story. I am just so intrigued by him already! And yes, I think Kelli would be great for him. I’m certainly looking forward to that book when it comes!

But yes, all in all, this was a really good book. It was simple, fun and easy to read, and the plot never hit a dry and boring spot. This is simply romance, and maybe that’s just what is so addictive about it. Plus point, there were funny bits in it too!

Temporarily Yours was another fun read. Sure, the setup was crazy. I mean, honestly, what are the chances of such thing happening? Yet, it did.

The characters in the book were alright I guess, I mean, they were nice characters, just not memorable. As for the pace, maybe I felt that fell in love a bit too fast? But who am I to say that? I mean, love just happens right? But oh man, why must Cooper be so hot? Haha, okay sorry a little bit shallow here oops. But I must say Kayla’s magic with numbers is crazy. I mean, how can anyone know so many stats just off the top of her head? But she can, so she’s cool.

One thing I really liked was how he faced his fears for her. Sure, he was scared, but I love the fact that he considered her more important than himself to actually be able to face a fear impeding him for so long, an irrational one at that. I know, because I have the same fear haha. I loved how they acted in front of her family, and I must say, I thought they acted really well indeed.

All in all, this book was just alright. It’s a pretty good read and I did enjoy it. The book was relatively fast-paced and it was a joy watching them fall in love.

Staking His Claim was a rather nice book. I like the plot, even though where the conflict would lie was rather obvious from the start.

I liked the obvious chemistry from the start, and I did enjoy how they fell in love, even though initially it was all lust. Still, I could tell that they did care for each other from the start and that did make me happy.

One thing I really liked though, was watching how even though Matt tried to stay away from her, he just couldn’t. I loved the whole message that showed how love heals, which was displayed rather well in this book. He didn’t want to want her and vice versa, but somehow they just came to be unable to live without the other. And I think that was one of the most beautiful things ever.

I really did like how as angry as Matt was with Lucy, he never did let her go. I mean, of course he was going to be angry she lied, but I think the fact that he couldn’t stay away to save himself just spoke wonders about love. Maybe not love exactly, but the spark that turned into love.

All in all, I did enjoy reading this book and it was a good read to pass the time.

I loved it. What more can I say? The build-up, the plot, the suspense, the characters, everything. It was just so good. And Ty Grady and Zane Garrett, perfect beyond belief.

From the start, the story intrigued me. I knew this was going to be an M/M from reviews I saw. Now, you see, I don’t really read M/M, but it is a secret guilty pleasure of mine. (Well, not really a secret anymore, is it?) And this blew all my expectations out of the water and more. Amazing in every way.

Let’s start with the storyline briefly before moving on to what I really want to talk about, the characters, shall we? This is a romantic suspense novel that I truly enjoyed. While I did suspect the killer rather early on, it was just unfounded suspicions. Nevertheless, it didn’t detract from the enjoyment of the book, but that was perhaps because I was more focused on the characters than the plot actually. Overall, the plot was well set-up and I liked that it did focus more on the characters than solely on the suspense side. And the romance. Alright, not so much of romance in a way, rather, just the build-up of sexual tension, and the culmination of it, because this book didn’t have that much of romance.

By the end of the book, I knew one thing. I was in love with Ty Grady and Zane Garrett. Don’t tell me they aren’t real, because I’m certain they are. They’re too perfect not to be. ;) But perhaps, I love Zane just a bit more than Ty.

I loved the sexual tension in this. When Zane pulled Ty close, I swear I died. It was just… I don’t even know how to describe it. And the sex? Hot beyond belief;)

I also loved how we find out a little bit of the characters here and there. While it isn’t made explicit, at the end of the book, one realizes that one has actually gotten to know them, though there isn’t any real heart-baring moment in the book. Sure, there are several parts here and there, but I think the authors have written the characters so well, that you don’t have to hear about their past to understand them. Somehow, unexplainably, you just do. The bantering between the characters was super amusing. It kept the book lively and engaging, while at the same time revealing more and more of each character.

We saw a lot of Zane in this book. Like, a lot of thoughts were written from his point of view. Yet, Ty wasn’t neglected. And that was something I really liked. I got to see both characters very evenly, albeit a lot from Zane’s point of view. Maybe that’s what caused me to fall irrevocably in love with him.

Zane and Ty are so perfect for each other. While they don’t know it yet, being an incurable romantic, I can just see that they’re gonna be so amazing for each other. And while they both tried to pretend to themselves it was just about the sex, it was pretty obvious they each developed feelings for each other along the way. And that was something I truly enjoyed seeing, especially in the later books.

In this book, I really couldn’t find any flaws in it. Well-written, with a very interesting voice. Good characters, actually they were amazing, interesting plot, and a great set-up for the start of their relationship. What’s not to love? But yes, I do agree that there were instances where the book jumped too quickly. Like all of a sudden, 5 months passed within a few pages while it took practically half the book for a single week. But this is such a minor thing, it didn’t really bother me. One thought did cross my mind though, is it possible for them to fall so hard for each other within only a week? Granted, it was an extremely action-packed week, where many things occurred to draw them close together.

All in all, I adored this book. Loved it. I was addicted, completely. Zane and Ty were hot and amazing characters, who very three-dimensional. They were very real, and to me, the authors conveyed who they were extremely well. Plot-wise, it was great too. I knew that when I finished this book, I simply could not wait to read the next. I had this book on my shelf for a year, and I am so thankful for that little voice that told me to read this book. Because I got sucked into an amazing series, with amazing characters, that you simply cannot help but fall in love with.

The Closing was a pretty enjoyable read. The premise of the book was intriguing and while it wasn’t what I expected, it still turned out to be an interesting read. Perhaps it may not have been the best read of my life, but it is certainly a book that I don’t regret having read.

The prologue of The Closing instantly grabbed my attention. It threw me straight into the action and kept me wanting to read on. I must admit though, I was a little lost when it went right back to the start. The transition was a little awkward and I was just a bit confused. But it’s really minor.

Dima, as most commonly known in the book, is a Russian metal tycoon. He is a rather shady character and not much is really known about him, which is a point I felt rather lacking. I would have liked to know more bout his background so I would be able to understand and identify better with him. He is someone that I didn’t expect at all. When I first read about him, I thought he would be those kind of cold-hearted jerks and all. But, I guess I really can’t judge. He is a very nice person to the people he loves. Ok, I know he should, but I felt he accepted Bella, the heroine, a little too easily and too quickly. I mean, being in his line, wouldn’t he be a little wary of new people? But he opened up to Bella so easily. It was kind of sweet though, I guess. And well, he’s Russian and he’s hot. What’s not to love?

As for Bella, she’s a rather funny character. She was very real and I think it was rather easy to identify with her. I liked her. At the beginning, I felt she was a little whiny and self-centered. But throughout the course of the book, I could see how she changed bit by bit and that was something I truly enjoyed. I love character development in books and in this area, it didn’t disappoint.

Overall, the plot was good and pretty fast-moving. Several times, it was just a little too fast and left me overwhelmed. Generally speaking though, the pace was good and I loved the interactions between the characters. The way Dima and Bella met were also really good. A little cliché to be sure, but I for one love clichés that are pulled off well and I felt this was good. Also, I felt that it was a very realistic book. At first, after the fight at the end, I thought Bella recovered a little too easily. But later, it was shown that she was undergoing trauma and it was depicted well! I actually liked the kidnapping part too, I felt it made Bella a more real person.

When she started to doubt Dima’s love for her, it just made Bella into a much more real character. It’s hard to hold on to that love especially when she was going through all those times and when she heard about Dima’s actions. But I really do truly admire Dima’s actions. It just proved his love for her in one clean stroke. It was sweet and rather powerful. Their reunion was also rather touching.

I have several complains though. I could never really feel the characters and as such, it made it difficult for me to get absorbed into the book. However, the plot was good enough to keep me hooked and keep on reading. I couldn’t really feel the love between the characters which was a little bit of a disappointment. Once in a while, I did though. Also, some transition points were a little weird. I can’t really remember where but I do know that at several places I was a little confused due to the transitions. The ending was a little abrupt, but it was rather sweet and did round off the story.

The speech did strike me as weird once in a while. I don’t know, maybe I’m a bit too used to colloquial English and am not sure how the Russians speak. But, I felt that it threw the tone off the book a little. Like when ‘don’t’ would be a better option, the words ‘do not’ were used instead. Again, little things. I hardly noticed but when I did, it just got a little on my nerves. But, I’m not the best person to judge, am I?

I enjoyed this book and certainly didn’t regret picking it up. It was interesting and generally, I liked the characters. They were realistic and fun to read about, most of the time.

My Review

I really enjoyed Keeper of My Heart. It was a really sweet romance. Nothing heavy, just a light, simple read that left me smiling at the end of it. The plot was good and the characters in the book were mostly likable and really enhanced the storyline.

Katie was a very strong character. Though everything seemed to be going wrong for her, she somehow managed to keep living on and didn’t give up through it all. She’s really ingenious heh. Her ideas throughout the book especially the stealing part left me laughing and totally in awe of her. Not about the act, but about her thought processes.

As for Max, he was a great character too. However, I felt myself unable to completely like him. It seemed as if I was waiting for him to do something but that never happened. I found him very high-handed. Though it isn’t that bad on its own, I just feel that he was extremely proud and kept looking down on Katie. Sure, she wasn’t the most sensible of people. I guess I just didn’t like the way he treated her and the way he felt. I was hoping that he would really get hit by his conscience but he never did. Alright, he did, but it wasn’t really emphasized.

The plot of the whole book was good. I remember that when I first saw the blurb a month ago, I just knew I had to read it. And when I finally did, I can only say that I have no regrets. The book is impossible to dislike because of the way it was written. So sweet and simple, but yet, it had so much meaning. The whole plot fell together really nicely and was well thought out. I felt that the pace of the book was perfect and the events flowed really smoothly.

All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book. I guess the only reason why I didn’t give it 5 stars was because it lacked that spark in it. A spark of passion. Sure, it was talked about, but I never felt it. That was what was lacking. However, I still really enjoyed the book. The dialogues the characters had were rather witty and I found myself smiling along with them at different intervals in the book.

Now, there really isn’t much that I can say about this book. Firstly, its really short. Secondly, about everything was fine with the book. There were no real problems, but at the same time, there wasn’t any part that really stood out. Thirdly, I’m so tired I can’t think. Oh wait. I do remember some things that I enjoyed. I really liked it when Max finally got struck by his conscience. I was really annoyed with him throughout quite a bit of the book. He just expected Katie to fall into his arms and obey his every command right from the start. I couldn’t stand that, and hence, I was secretly delighted when he was put in his place. Everytime he discovered how much he had hurt Katie, I was just right there laughing at him.

Hmm, what else is there to say? Alright, just a short bit about the storyline. I found it rather interesting most of the time. I mean, I was addicted to it; I couldn’t put the book down. I guess it really did appeal to me and all I wanted was to see Katie and Max get their HEA. Though both had their own share of problems, especially Katie in the beginning, I’m glad to say that most of the problems were worked through and resolved. The character development in this book is really good. Though there wasn’t much space, Darcy managed to show how the characters matured over the course of the book. In the end, they both finally did grow up.

I really liked this book. Though there isn’t anything really special about it, I guess its unique in the sense that it’s a sweet, clean romance. I don’t read many of these type of genre and I must say, I’m glad that I read this book. Not because I have to read it for the blog tour, but because I really enjoyed it. Definitely a recommended read.

This was a rather disappointing read. Thing is, it should have been great. It had everything a book needed – likable characters, good plot, hot hero (hehe), sexual tension, etc. But I didn’t like it. Perhaps it didn’t come together for me. On its own, they were all good. But together, it didn’t work very well. But then again, it could also be due to my mood. I doubt so though. I read it over a few sittings because I was kinda bored with it.

The characters were both rather likable most of the time. Stavros was a jerk at times. Super cynical and jaded. But I’m glad to say that love did change most of it. As for Tessa, I didn’t like her towards the end. Just because she was in love with him didn’t mean she had to be so clingy. Sometimes, you gotta make a stand. Sure, she wanted to stay with him because she felt that it was the only way she could have the love of her life by her side. But can she really settle for so little? And should she? I couldn’t like that part of her because she couldn’t move away, until it was too late.

As for the plot, overall it was good. I just didn’t feel anything for it. Maybe it was just not written well, in terms of the descriptions. I didn’t like the pace. Some parts were way too draggy and others too fast. When he found her I was so surprised because nothing was shown in between. I would have liked to see the pain that both of them experienced through their separation.

As for the love between the characters, I guess it was there. I just didn’t really feel it. Honestly though, I have no idea why she loves him. As in, her reasons for doing so don’t really make sense. Then again, love isn’t supposed to make sense right?

Now, this review is super difficult to write. Because in all honesty, I had no feelings for the book at all. There was no emotional connection between the characters and I, nothing that made me want to turn to the next page. Which was quite sad actually. At the beginning, it looked like it could be a good book! Oh well, it could also have been my mood, but I doubt so. So. All in all, a rather disappointing read.
